Grease dripping from the hood: what it means and how urgent it is
Grease that drips is grease that has run out of places to sit. It is the most visible sign that a system is overdue, and it is worth acting on quickly rather than scheduling around.
Where it drips from, and what that tells you
From the hood edge or the filter track onto the line. The filters and the hood plenum are loaded. This is the most common and the most urgent, because it is dripping onto cooking surfaces.
From a seam in the duct, inside the building. Duct accumulation, and a duct is the path a fire travels. Worth treating as serious.
From the fan or onto the roof. The fan is discharging grease, which usually means it has not been properly cleaned, and frequently means it cannot be, because it is not hinged. Roof grease is also a landlord and insurer conversation.
From an access panel. Same as duct, plus a seal that needs attention.
Why filters matter more than they look
Filters are the system’s first stage, and they are the cheapest part to get right.
Wrong or missing filters let grease straight into the duct, which turns a cleanable surface problem into an expensive one. Mesh filters in particular are not what a modern commercial system should be running.
Damaged filters do the same thing through the gap.
Filters that are not cleaned often enough overflow, which is exactly what produces dripping onto the line.
A filter exchange service swaps your filters on a schedule so clean ones arrive and dirty ones leave, and on a busy line it is the single most effective thing between full cleanings.
What a proper cleaning does about it
Hood, filters, the full duct run, and the fan, cleaned to bare metal on accessible surfaces. Two details decide whether that actually happens:
Access panels. A duct run with no access is a duct nobody has cleaned. Fitting panels is ordinary work and it converts a permanently dirty section into a maintainable one.
A hinged fan. Fans get skipped when they cannot be lifted without disconnecting them, and the fan is often where the heaviest grease in the system is. A hinge kit at $150–$300 solves that for every future service.
If a previous service did not mention either, that is probably where your grease is.
Cost and timing
| Service | Range |
|---|---|
| Single-hood system | $300–$700 |
| Multi-hood, 2 to 4 hoods | $800–$1,500 |
| Small hood | $200–$450 |
| Large or complex system | $800+ |
| Fan hinge kit install | $150–$300 |
| Rush or pre-inspection | expect a 25 to 50 percent premium |
Typical market ranges, from the pricing page, and the cost calculator prices your system including a first-time deep clean.
A heavily loaded system that has never been taken to bare metal sits at the top of its range, and that is honest rather than opportunistic: there is more grease, it takes longer, and it usually needs access work before anyone can reach the worst of it.
We schedule the work after close. Ask us to confirm the date and that the work will be finished before first prep.
The frequency question underneath it
If grease is dripping, the interval is wrong for what you cook. NFPA 96 sets inspection frequency by cooking volume and fuel: monthly for solid fuel, quarterly for 24-hour or charbroiling operations, semiannual for moderate volume, annual for low volume. Adding a smoker or a wood-fired oven moves the whole system to monthly.
Getting onto the right schedule is also how you stop paying the rush premiums contractors commonly charge. The NFPA 96 page has the full table, and the failed inspection page covers what to do if this has already been written up.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is grease dripping from the hood dangerous?
It is the clearest sign a system is past due, and yes, it matters. Grease in the hood and duct is fuel in a path that runs through the building, which is the entire reason NFPA 96 exists. Dripping means there is enough accumulation that it is no longer staying where it collected.
How fast can it be dealt with?
We schedule hood cleaning after close, so it need not cost you a service period; ask us for the date and the price when you call. If grease is actively dripping onto a cooking surface, treat it as urgent rather than scheduling it for next month.
Why is there grease on my roof?
The fan is discharging it, which means the system is heavily loaded and often that the fan itself has never been properly cleaned. Roof grease is also a liability with your landlord and your insurer, and it is one of the things a fire inspector will note.
What does it cost?
$300–$700 for a single-hood system and $800–$1,500 for a multi-hood system, with a first-time deep clean on a heavily loaded system at the top of the range. A fan hinge kit at $150–$300 makes the fan cleanable on every future visit.
